SIG Use 100% Eco-Friendly Gas Fuel in Milling Machine at PT Semen Gresik

PT Semen Gresik Rembang Factory, a subsidiary of PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG), has succeeded in converting 100% of oil fuel (BBM) use into Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) which is more eco-friendly, for operating the finish mill.

CNG or compressed natural gas is a gas fuel made by compressing methane (CH4) extracted from natural gas. CNG is considered more eco-friendly because it produces lower emissions than other fossil fuels and it contains less carbon and produces few pollutant emissions.

SIG Corporate Secretary, Vita Mahreyni said, the use of CNG that eco-friendly by PT Semen Gresik at the Rembang Factory is a concrete manifestation of the Company's contribution in reducing carbon emissions. By converting oil fuel to CNG, CO2 carbon emissions from combustion can be reduced from 74.1 kg CO2/GJ to 56.1 kg CO2/GJ.

"Besides being more eco-friendly, CNG also has other advantages such as being more economical and making equipment maintenance easier. This is because the price of CNG is cheaper then diesel, and the efficiency of gas combustion is also better, which helps reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This is in line with SIG's initiative strategy as a holding company in improving operational excellence through program efficiency," said Vita Mahreyni.

Furthermore, Vita Mahreyni said that the use of alternative energy sources in the form of solar panels and biomass at PT Semen Gresik Rembang Factory also continues to show an increase. Currently there are 30 solar panels installed with a capacity of 14.55 kWp. Meanwhile, the use of biomass from rice husks, corn cobs, plastic packaging and leather waste to substitute heat energy or thermal substitution rate (TSR) has succeeded in reaching 1.5% by 2023.

Various strategic initiatives and innovations in contributing to environmental protection, including the program to convert fossil fuels to eco-friendly energy sources, have led PT Semen Gresik Rembang factory to achieve many achievements, such as the Good Mining Practice award and the Tamasya (mining makes society prosperous) Award from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), as well as the Green PROPER award from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
